Top Ten Books
That Were Totally Deceiving
I'm going to try my hardest to not spoil anything here in case someone hasn't read them...
The "Cover Confusion" Deception
Those books whose covers deceived me:
The Duff - Kody Keplinger
Covergirl isn't very duffy to me.
This also falls under the "so much more than I thought it would be" category. Love this book.
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin
I still don't think I get the cover. It's stunning, but doesn't connect.
Looking For Alaska - John Green
I'm very vocal how much I don't like this cover. But love the book!
The "So Much More Than I Ever Thought It Would Be" Deception:
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Thought it would be cute fluff. It's that, but SO SO MUCH MORE.
Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
I had no idea how utterly beautiful this would be.
every book by Rachel Cohn (a few not pictured)
all her stuff is very fluffy cute, but underlying are always some very poignant thoughts and struggles. Fan for life!
The "Heard Some Things About It But Was Totally Wrong" Deception:
Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony and Rodrigo Corral (review here!)
Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyers
As I've said before, didn't even care about the pregnancy scene. It was everything else. Ugh.
The "If You've Read It, You Know" Deception:
Bridge to Terabithia - Katherine Paterson
I can't. I just can't. One of my favs ever.
What books deceived you?
Leave your link in the comments and I'll hop by!
Hey, great list - I've heard so many good things about Mara Dyer - can't wait for the UK release! Also, I agree with Breaking Dawn, so much worse than I'd expected!
ReplyDeleteTara @ Hey, Tara
I hope you like Mara Dyer! I need to reread it because I feel like I missed a lot going on - I'm not entirely crazy about the novel like so many others (love the cover though!).
DeleteI love your list! So many gorgeous books here! I want to read 'The Sky is Everywhere' soo bad- I can'e see a time when I'll actually HAVE time to read it though :-(
ReplyDeleteYou're right about Duff- I think that cover is weird!

pleaaaaaase make time for The Sky is Everywhere soon, it's so so beautiful and I promise you won't regret it! And yes, the Duff cover is just...not so good. The big letters and the non-DUFFy girl don't do it for me.

I completely agree with Lola and Prep! Love those books and the covers don't do them justice.
ReplyDeleteMy Top Ten Tuesday
They really, really don't! I always wished Prep had a more fitting cover.

I like a bunch of the books you picked! And I haven't read Bridge to Terabithia, but I remember going into the movie thinking it would be a fun fantasy movie for kids... then... oh god... I just remember being sobbing for the entire last half of the movie, clutching to my friend and trying to breathe. It's funny in hindsight.
ReplyDeleteAnd I saw you are going to LA Times Festival of Books! I'm so jealous! SOOOO jealous. I just moved from LA to the DC area and LATFOB is probaby what I'll miss most about LA. It is suuuuuch an amazing event! I hope you take pictures and notes and post about it so I can live vicariously through you. :)
My roommate was going to see it but hadn't read the book, and I warned her to not go into it thinking it's like a Where The Wild Things Are v.2 or something...she didn't believe me and came home with mascara streaks down her face haha. Even when I watched the movie, I KNEW what was going to happen and I still bawled my eyes out. It kills me. just kills me.
DeleteAnd ahhhh I'm so excited for LATFOB! I've never been but always wanted to! I'll make sure to do the best I can with pictures/posts so you can live it like you're there :)
Gingerbread and Shrimp, LOVE LOVE LOVE! I was obsessed with those books as a teenager :) I definitely like the alternate Looking for Alaska cover with the girl on it.
ReplyDeleteI so wish I'd read Rachel Cohn's books in high school (I might have been out of HS by the time they were released...oh god I'm old), they'd have been my lifesavers.
DeleteThanks for commenting!
I haven't read any Rachel Cohn, other than her books w/ David Levithan (which I LOVE) so it's nice to get the DL on her. And my son has a copy of Bridge to Terabithia, may have to swipe it from him:) Great list Ashley:)
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
Oh i adore Cohn & Levithan together - they can do no wrong. Cohn by herself is fantastic too, I hope you try her out. And oh goodness PLEASE PLEASE read Bridge to Terabithia! I mean...it's just...oh. So so good. Just be prepared, is all. If/when you read it, please come back and let me know what you thought!
DeleteIt took me a long time to understand the cover for MARA, but Michelle told me it has to do with Mara's feeling of drowning, being trapped by the past and caught in a chokehold of terror.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I just think it's pretty haha ;)
Btw...totally with you on CHOPSTICKS! Great list this week...I'm your newest follower :)
Hmmm...that's good to know about Mara Dyer! I can see how that translates then, but...yeah I'll just stick to that it's stunning and that's that haha.
DeleteThanks of commenting, and I'm following you back!
Great list! I put Looking for Alaska on my list, because the title confused me. However, I also don't like the cover that much. And I agree about The Sky is Everywhere. The cover doesn't convey how amazing that book is.
ReplyDeleteThe title definitely confused me a bit, too - it was hard for me to wrap around that the girl's name was Alaska since it's so odd. And yes! I love the cover for the sky is everywhere, but it really is nothing on the reality of the book.

I love your list!! Cool idea for the layout!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I kept trying to stick with only one of the sub-categories but couldn't think of enough for each one -- so I just smushed them all together haha.
DeleteReally like how you sorted your picks out!
ReplyDeleteI read Bridge to Terabithia in grade 5, and everyone was traumatized. No one saw the twist coming, and it's the first time I think we were all affected by a character's death.
And Mara Dyer is, I think, an awesome cover, but you're right- it doesn't quite fit with the book.
Great list!
Terabithia was definitely one of my first (if not the first) exposures to a book death and it just wrecked my little heart -- although who am I kidding, it still kills me. I still can't think about it too much or else I tear up haha.
